How long have you been in your industry?38 Years (1987)
Why did you choose your industry?Helix Electric is a family business founded in 1985, and I joined in 1987. I saw an opportunity to continue and grow something my family built while making a meaningful impact in the industry.
Who are your typical clients? We work with all the major contractors in Nevada at this point. Our projects span multi-family, mixed-use, and large-scale developments, making us a key player in the region.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I enjoy being innovative and differentiating ourselves by providing more than just competitive pricing—we focus on value. Solving complex challenges and building strong relationships with our clients is what keeps the work exciting.
What are common problems you see?A major challenge is unqualified individuals lowering market standards, making it harder to maintain quality. Additionally, the shortage of skilled labor forces us to be proactive in recruitment and training.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Bring us in early during the design phase to ensure constructible drawings and avoid costly issues later. A design-build approach helps streamline the process, reducing inefficiencies and unexpected delays.
When is your busy season? Each market is different, but we maintain a strong backlog year-round. However, due to the size of our company, we must continuously replenish our backlog as we complete projects.
What keeps you up at night? The industry's volatility and reliance on people make it unpredictable. While we know how to build projects, managing workforce challenges and maintaining a strong pipeline of skilled professionals is always top of mind.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Helix has recently expanded in Utah for example by bringing innovation, experience, and a strong work ethic that sets us apart. Many local competitors rely on steady market growth, but we push boundaries to drive efficiency and deliver results.
How involved are you in the community?Helix Electric supports Nevada communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. In Southern Nevada, we’ve made significant donations to the 98.5 KLUC Toy Drive and Inspiring Children’s Foundation and raised $68,000 for charities through our annual fall golf tournament in 2024. In Northern Nevada, we aid the Washoe CASA Foundation, Eddy House, and so many more organizations.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity? If I have to pick just one cause, I’m very involved in organizations supporting Down syndrome. Giving back to causes that make a difference in people’s lives is something I’m passionate about.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business? When it comes to leadership positions in the trades, be prepared for a long and demanding journey, requiring resilience and financial stability. Many talented contractors struggle with business aspects like collections, which can make or break a company.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Golfing and Skiing
