How long have you been in your industry?4 years
Why did you choose your industry?I endured 12 different child care providers during the first four years of being a working mom, and I want to prevent other parents from this frustration by offering a marketplace tech solution that quickly and easily finds and manages one ideal child care provider who fits a family's location, schedule and budget.
Who are your typical clients?MomSub's typical clients are working parents who need child care part-time or during non-traditional hours, so they can stay in their career.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I am most fulfilled by the stories of our working mom clients who have gained calm, confidence and clarity as a result of being able to delegate the process of finding and managing child care to MomSub.
What are common problems you see?Typical child care apps give parents a list of sitters and make them do all the work of contacting and vetting the providers, which only leads to hours, days or weeks of interactions with caregivers who aren't available when needed. Parents with consistent weekly child care needs have to scramble to adjust more than 25% of the time because illness, holidays, vacations and unforeseen circumstances cause schedules to change. Miscommunication causes friction to develop between sitters and parents Too many child care providers are unreliable and don't show up for interviews or scheduled shifts, leaving parents stressed and overwhelmed. The vast majority of nanny agencies charge exorbitant upfront and hourly rates that are unaffordable for average middle class families. Daycare providers have long waiting lists and don't offer flexible schedules to suit families' needs. Most school systems release children before parents are done with their work day.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?I tell parents to be open minded about their potential child care provider and consider another mom who is bringing her own kids, consider paying a little more to get a quality caregiver, consider being flexible with their criteria, share schedule changes in advance and learn to delegate the process of managing care. I tell child care providers to stay off their phones, to focus on the children's safety above all else, to be reliable to show up on time for every interview and shift, to help clean up after children, to find out how much or how little communication a parent wants throughout the day, to engage the kids in fun and enriching activities, to share schedule requests in advance, and to be a set of trusted helping hands for the family.
When is your busy season? In mid to late summer, parents are preparing to hire a new child care provider to fit their schedule when school starts. At the same time, students who were providing child care are leaving for college. That's the time when we see the greatest need for weekly child care providers.
What keeps you up at night? How am I going to quickly find the right nanny for all the requests we get without unlimited funds to grow my roster faster? How am I going to grow my revenue by attracting more providers and parents to our marketplace without unlimited funds to automate and delegate more of the process? How am I going to meet the right investors to provide the needed funds to grow the business while still providing top notch service to my clients?
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I comment in Facebook Mom groups. I update my website. I post on social media. I attend events and network in person and online. I reach out to people and companies that I think align with our vision.
How involved are you in the community?I speak at events to inspire women and business leaders.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Sierra Club
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Any business leader has a better chance of success if they are continually working to improve their skills and knowledge by consuming books and listening to podcasts.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Biking, chess, dancing, hiking, video production, movies, board games, Bears games, Cubs games.
